However, it is important to note that critical devices require higher availability levels because any downtime may affect patients’ lives; therefore, devices should be categorized by criticality and different availability targets set for each group.

Simplified numerical example: MTBF = 200 hours and MTTR = 5 hours yield availability of about 97.56%. This shows that even a slight change in MTTR affects the percentage, so improving repair processes directly contributes to higher availability.

Maintenance Cost per Device

The maintenance cost per device includes the cost of spare parts, technician fees, calibration or post-repair test costs, and expenses related to lost productivity during downtime (downtime cost). Summing these components monthly or annually gives a real figure that can be compared with replacement value or the cost of a comprehensive maintenance contract.

Tracking this cost helps management identify devices that are becoming financial burdens. When ongoing maintenance costs approach or exceed replacement costs, replacement or long-term contracts with vendors become more logical.
